Old Shoreham Road, Brighton

Edburton was employed as the main contractor to construct a new segregated cycle route to improve:

  • Cycling provisions;

  • An efficient and safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists;

  • Upgrade and improve traffic signal junctions;

  • Provide safer crossing routes;

  • Upgrading street furniture.


The project required the closure of Old Shoreham Road for approximately 4 months to ensure that the work was completed safely. The cycle route partly funded by the sustainable transport charity Sustrans to help deliver the improvements.

The scope of works included:

  • Alter existing channel gullies and install new gullies to drainage system.

  • Construct new footpaths with dropped kerbs and driveway access.

  • Ducting for street lighting and traffic signals.

  • Lay concrete kerbs, tactile paving and specialist paving with cyclist and pedestrian symbols.

  • Type 1 sub-base and tarmac surfacing for cycleway and footway.
